Cistern of Aspar / Yavuz Selim Camii
The Cistern of Aspar, one of of three Byzantine reservoirs within the city walls, dates from the 5th century. Here, the hamlet of wooden houses and gardens, known locally as Çukurbostan ( Sunken Garden ), which formerly occupied the site has been swept away. Most of the area is now occupied by formal gardens and recreational facilities.
In the background is the mosque of Sultan Selim I ( r 1512-1520 ) which was completed in 1522 during the reign of Suleiman I.
