One of three Byzantine reservoirs within the city walls, the Cistern of Aspar, constructed in the 5th century, fell into disuse in the later Byzantine period. Seen here is the hamlet of wooden houses and gardens, known locally as Çukurbostan ( Sunken Garden ) which occupied the site until the late 20th century.
