One of three Byzantine reservoirs within the city walls, the Cistern of Aspar, constructed in the 5th century, fell into disuse in the later Byzantine period. Until relatively recently it was occupied by the hamlet of wooden houses and gardens seen here - something of an oasis in the crowded city. Known locally as Çukurbostan ( Sunken Garden ).
In the background is the mosque of Sultan Selim I ( r 1512-1520 ) which was completed in 1522 during the reign of Suleiman I.
