Cistern of St Mocius
Constructed by Emperor Anastasius I in the early 6th century, this was the largest of three Byzantine reservoirs within the city walls. Named after the nearby church of St Mocius, it fell into disuse in the later Byzantine period. By the mid-20th century the eastern half of the area was occupied by wooden houses and by the early 1980s the western half was taken up by a soccer pitch.
Whatever was being constructed here has now gone, having been replaced by gardens and various recreational facilities.
