The mound at Samsat ( ancient Samosata ) rises some 50m above the Euphrates flood-plain. A site occupied from prehistoric times, the remains of a medieval castle are outlined on the summit. The small town of Samsat is to the left.
View from the east - the mound is set some way back from the present course of the river.
... This area has been flooded by the waters of the lake formed behind the Atatürk Dam.
