Samsat (Samosata)
A distant view of Samsat, ancient Samosata. Historically this was an important crossing point of the Euphrates and a hub of various military and trade routes. Evolving from prehistoric times, the citadel-mound, rising some 50m above the flood-plain, was occupied through to the medieval period. At ground level the present town occupies a part of the site of the Late Hellenistic - Roman city, which was encircled by a defensive wall some 5 km long. View from the north-west. ... Much of this area has been flooded by the waters of the lake formed behind the Atatürk Dam.
