Located at an important crossing point of the Euphrates, the citadel-mound at Samsat ( ancient Samosata ) was occupied from prehistoric times through to the medieval period. At the foot of the mound a city developed in the Late Hellenistic Commagene - Roman era, defended by a wall some 5 km long. This view, from the north-east, is of the defences facing the river at the southern end of the site, adjacent to the 'Edessa' ( Urfa ) Gate.
