The 13th century Byzantine 'Church of Holy Wisdom', Hagia Sophia, was constructed during the reign of Manuel I Comnenos, Emperor of Trebizond ( r 1238-1263 ). Sometime after the fall of Trebizond to the Ottomans the building became a mosque.
After falling into disrepair, restoration of the structure, notable for its Late-Byzantine wall paintings, was carried out between 1958 and 1963, following which it opened as a museum.
