The 13th century Byzantine Church of Hagia Sophia lies west of the city centre, overlooking the sea. Occupying an ancient site, it was constructed during the reign of Manuel I Comnenos, Emperor of Trebizond ( r 1238-1263 ). To the right is the 15th century Bell Tower. Sometime after the fall of Trebizond to the Ottomans the building became a mosque.
After falling into disrepair, restoration of the structure with its notable wall paintings was carried out between 1958 and 1963, following which it opened as a museum. View to the south-west from Devlet Sahil Yolu Caddesi.
