The Trabzon to Rize road crosses the Manahoz River at Sürmene. Today the Black Sea Coastal Highway passes on the seaward side of the block of buildings. In the distance smoke rises from the Tea Factory ( I once visited this place during a late-night shift, thereafter vowing never to have any ambition to work in a tea factory ).
At this time, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, thousands travelled west along this road from Georgia, living in their municipal buses, trying to sell what they had at roadside 'Rus Bazaars'. View to the east from the Hotel Kalfa.
