The ancient settlement of Zelve, some 2 km east of Çavuşin, consists of a large number of rock-cut houses and some churches dating from the 9th and 10th centuries.
Following an increasing number of rock falls, in 1952 the inhabitants moved to the new village of Yeni Zelve ( now Aktepe ) closer to Avanos.
Zelve is now an Open Air Museum.
