I got an early-morning dolmuş ( shared taxi ) from Nevşehir towards Ürgüp, getting off at the Göreme turn. Strolling down the road to the open-air museum, I caught a glimpse of the twin peaks of Uçhisar.
The strange landscape of this part of Cappadocia was formed as a result of ash being deposited by an erupting volcano thousands of years ago. Over time the compacted ash ( tuff ) eroded into the shapes visible today.
