Theodosian Land Walls - Fifth Military Gate (Sulukule Kapısı)

The Walls, stretching from the Sea of Marmara to the Golden Horn, were built in the early 5th century, during the reign of Emperor Theodosius II. Seen here is the Fifth Military Gate, located a short distance north-east of Vatan Bulvarı ( now Adnan Menderes Bulvarı ).
Through the Gate one enters the neighbourhood of Sulukule, until 2008 home to the city's Roma community. A swathe of it has been cleared and redeveloped.
