On an early morning stroll I chanced upon a small çay bahçe ( tea garden ), in this case a rough piece of ground with a shack in one corner and a few wooden stools scattered about. As I sipped glasses of strong Turkish tea, I surveyed the scene.
This is the wholesale fruit and vegetable market on Ragıp Gümüşpala Caddesi, next to the Golden Horn between the Atatürk and Galata Bridges. It's the rush hour. While buses and cars try to thread their way along the road, hamals ( porters ) carry produce across it to the waiting pick-up trucks. The site is now occupied by landscaped gardens, a new market having opened in Bayrampaşa in 1986.
This view, to the south-east, I think is from near the Kazancılar ( Üç Mihraplı ) Mosque.
Smoke drifts off the ferryboats.
