Descended from an aristocratic Byzantine family, Mahmut Paşa converted to Islam after the Ottoman Conquest, eventually becoming Grand Vizier under Sultan Mehmet II. He founded the mosque which bears his name in 1462, making it one of the oldest in the city.
However, he fell out of favour and was executed in 1474. His türbe ( tomb ) lies behind the mosque and is notable for its unususal mosaic tile decoration.
