Hagia Eirene < > Aya İrini
December 1993
A glimpse of the sunlit dome of Hagia Eirene, the 'Church of Holy Peace'. The original church on the site was one of the earliest in Byzantium. The present structure, built by Justinian, largely dates from 537, being repaired after earthquake damage in 740.
After the Ottoman Conquest ıt was enclosed within the outer walls of the Topkapı Palace, being used as an armoury. It became a museum in the 19th century. After being restored, the building is currently used for classical music perfomances.
This view, to the north-east, is from the North Gallery of Hagia Sophia.
