In 1837 Gaspare Fossati, a court architect to Tsar Nicholas I, was sent to Constantinople to construct a new Russian Embassy to replace the existing 18th century building nearby. Completed in 1845, it is now the Consulate General of the Russian Federation.
This glimpse from the north-west is from the top of Kumbaracı Yokuşu, just off İstiklal Caddesi.
