A Genoese colony was established in Galata in the later 13th century, surviving until the Ottoman Conquest of 1453. Seen here is one of the few surviving towers of the Genoese fortifications, at the apex of which is the Galata Tower. Most of the walls were demolished between 1863 and 1865 in order to improve communication in the area. The bell-tower in the background is that of the Church of SS Peter and Paul.
