A view to the south-west from the Galata Tower. In the centre-right foreground can be seen two surviving towers of the fortificatıons of the Genoese colony situated here from the later 13th century until the Ottoman Conquest of 1453. The Galata Tower was built in 1348 at the apex of the fortifications. Most of the walls were demolished between 1863 and 1865 in order to improve communication within the area.
