The city's southern defences are set back on high ground above the River Tigris. Tower 55 on the left dates from 1182-83, whilst the central Tower 56 carries a prominant inscription dating its construction to 1034-35 during the period of Marwanid rule. Tower 57 to the right was built in 1092-93 at the end of the rule of Seljuk Sultan Malik Shah.
Whenever the gap in the wall here appeared, it has not been repaired, allowing access to the extramural cemetery.
