A length of wall at the south of the city, set back on high ground above the River Tigris, with Tower 49 in the distance. Tower 54, nearest the camera, carries an inscription testifying to its construction in 1045-46 during the period of Marwanid rule. Tower 53, in the centre, together with its ruined neighbour beyond, originally defended a gate into the city here in the Byzantine era.
