This unique minaret, supported on four basalt pillars, is associated with the Sheikh Mutahhar Mosque ( out of view to the left ). Said to have been constructed as a tower in 906, becoming a minaret when the Mosque was built in 1500, it has somehow managed to survive centuries of earth tremors.
The 17th century Ottoman Turkish traveller Evliya Çelebi suggested in his Book of Travels, the Seyahatname, that there was originally a fifth pillar supporting the centre of the structure.
