Occupying a prominant height overlooking the confluence of the Gerger River and the Euphrates, Arsames I established the Commagene city of Arsemeia here in the 3rd century BC. Remains of medieval and later occupation are scattered over the lower part of the site. In the distance the town of Gerger is in shadow to the left of picture.

... A part of this area has now been flooded by the lake formed behind the Atatürk Dam.
