In 1954, three Germans from Ulm, Hans Seefeld, Heinz Sokoll and Egon Kuhn, perhaps inspired by the journey of compatriot Oskar Speck, decided to travel to Australia to see the Melbourne Olympics of 1956 - by kayak. Paddling down the river, in the gorge south of Gerger, to the east of Köklüce, they came across the ruins of the Syriac Monastery of Mor Abhai. They left their names in one of the darkened rooms.
... This area is at the upper reaches of the lake formed behind the Atatürk Dam. The ruins have been submerged.
