Musawwarat es-Sufra - The Great Enclosure

This enigmatic Meroitic site, thought to date from the 3rd century BC, lies some 25km from the Nile, south-west of Shendi. It consists of a number of buildings, together with a series of corridors, ramps and compounds, surrounding a temple. Nearby are other temples and a large hafir, an enclosure designed to collect and store annual rainfall.
