The pyramids of the royal cemeteries at Meroë date from c 300 BC to c AD 350. Built of sandstone, the rubble-filled structures range in height from c 10 - 30m. Typically, remains were interred in an underground chamber below a funerary chapel projecting from the base of the pyramid. In this view Pyramid 4 is left of picture, with Pyramid 11 on the right ( numbering after Dunham ).
There has been a certain amount of reconstruction at the site.
More recent photographs show a substantial build-up of wind-blown sand in the area.
Some 5 km east of the Nile at Begrawiya, near Kabushiya.
