The pyramids of the royal cemeteries at Meroë were built during the period c 300 BC to c AD 350. This view shows the South Cemetery in the foreground and beyond it the later North Cemetery. The structures range in height from c 10 - 30m. The South Cemetery had been in use for over 400 years before the building of the pyramids. 
The site, 200 km north-east of Khartoum, lies some 5 km east of the Nile at Begrawiya, near Kabushiya.
