The remains of the ancient city of Meroë lie on the east bank of the Nile some 5 km north-east of the town of Kabushiya. It became the capital of the Kingdom of Kush possibly in the 6th century BC, flourishing until the 4th century AD.
The Temple of Amun, east of the walled 'Royal City' is thought to date from the 3rd century BC. Seen here is the altar in the temple's sanctuary.
