The Basilica of Santi Quattro Coronati, dedicated to four unknown martyrs, was founded in the 4th century. In the 9th century the basilica was enlarged by Pope Leo IV, although the church was destroyed by the Normans in 1084. Pope Paschal II built a smaller basilica on the site in the early 12th century, retaining what remained of the original apse, seen here.
