Shrewsbury is an important rail junction, with trains travelling to and from South and West Wales, Chester and North Wales, Crewe and Manchester and Wolverhampton and Birmingham. Seen here are platforms at the south end of the station suspended above the River Severn with beyond the Severn Bridge Junction. The signal box here is the world's largest surviving mechanical example.
The large building on the right is Shrewsbury Abbey, founded in 1083.
