The world's first major cast iron bridge was built across the River Severn in 1779. Constructed by ironmaster Abraham Darby III and developed from a design by Thomas Farnolls Pritchard, a Shrewsbury architect, the bridge provided a link between the north bank of the Severn below the town of Madeley, and Broseley, south of the river.
The bridge has a span of some 30m, with the arch rising to about 15m above river level, allowing for the passage beneath it of a Severn trow without it having to lower its mast.   View from the west.
... Repairs to the bridge were carried out in 2017-18. It was repainted in its original colour of deep red.
