Begun in 1313 by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, Dunstanburgh Castle occupies a promontory overlooking the North Sea. Seen here is the Lilburn Tower, thought to have been built by John de Lilburn in the early 1320s as part of the castle's western defences.
