In 1943 Slapton Sands was selected as the location for a number of large-scale exercises in preparation for the forthcoming invasion of Normandy ( D-Day ). Some 3000 local inhabitants were evacuated from their villages and farms to make way for the thousands of American troops involved. This monument was presented by the US Army Authorities in 1954 in recognition of their co-operation.
The monument was relocated to this place in 2002 following severe storm damage in the area.
