Portland Harbour is the fourth largest man-made harbour in the world. The breakwaters enclosing it were constructed between 1849-72 and 1896-1905. The Royal Navy developed a base here from 1845, which finally closed in 1995.
My great-great-grandfather, William Dockar, a seaman in the Victorian navy, was based here before being pensioned off in 1875, retiring to nearby Melcombe Regis.
