Before the construction of their barracks at Stonehouse in the later 18th century, this area was used as a parade ground by the Royal Marines.
It is now the location of Robert Lenkiewicz's 'Elizabethan Mural' ( also known as the 'Barbican Mural' ), painted 1971-2, seen here. His shop, The Portrait Painter, is next to it.
The mural still exists, but has suffered severe degradation.
