This obelisk was erected in 1890 as a memorial to Field Marshal Stapleton Cotton, 1st Viscount Combermere, on the instructions of his wife, who died in 1889. Sited on high ground overlooking Combermere Park to the south-east, location of the Cotton family seat, Combermere Abbey.
