Diyarbakır takes its name from the Bakr tribe, who settled in the region in the 7th century. Until 1937 it was known as Amida, the name given to it by the Romans when they occupied the city.
Diyarbakır is notable for its City Walls, originally built by Constantius II in the 4th century. Successive occupiers repaired and rebuilt these impressive defences, mainly during the 10th-13th centuries.
