At the southern end of the Bosphorus, an inlet, now known as The Golden Horn, has been a haven for seafarers for millenia.
The Byzantine harbours of Neorion and Prosphorion were sited on its southern shore, whilst in the Ottoman era Imperial Navy shipyards were established on the northern shore.

Over time both sides of the waterway became occupied by a congested mass of shipyards, warehouses and factories. It also became heavily polluted.
In the 1980s almost everything on the southern shore and much opposite was swept away, being replaced by landscaped gardens and recreational facilities, which now include the Rahmi Koç Museum, housed in a former shipyard at Hasköy.
