A number of structures resembling Roman tombs are placed about the landscape at Sumatar. Syriac inscriptions at the site dating to the 2nd and 3rd centuries would seem to indicate that Sumatar was a centre for the worship of the moon god Sin, and some believe that these ruins are the remains of temples. This is a view of Structure 1 ( numbering after Segal ). Beneath it are underground chambers containing arcosolia ( arched recesses where bodies were placed ).
