A number of structures resembling Roman tombs are placed about the landscape at Sumatar. Syriac inscriptions at the site dating to the 2nd and 3rd centuries would seem to indicate that Sumatar was a centre for the worship of the moon god Sin, and some believe that the ruins are the remains of temples.
