View towards Eminönü from Karaköy. On the skyline the Süleymaniye Mosque, whilst to its left stands the Beyazıt Tower, built in 1828 as a fire-watching station. Throughout history whole neighbourhoods of Constantinople were destroyed by fire, not surprising when most of the densely-concentrated houses were made of wood.
