Late afternoon view from Karaköy towards Eminönü. In the distance commuters are ferried home. On the skyline is the Süleymaniye Mosque, whilst the single minaret to the left belongs to the Rüstem Paşa Mosque of 1561.
The buildings on the shore are those at Zindan Kapı, a cluster of shops and businesses adjacent to one of the few surviving towers of the Byzantine sea defences. For centuries the tower was used as a prison ( zindan ). Most of the buildings were swept away in the 1980s and today much of the area is used for car-parking.
One quiet Sunday I came across a gathering of pigeon enthusiasts there.
