In 2009 the district merged with the neighbouring district of Eminönü, which had been a separate administration since 1928.

The district of Fatih ( 'Conqueror' ) is named after Sultan Mehmet II, who triumphed over the Byzantine defenders of Constantinople in May 1453.
The extensive Fatih Mosque complex was built between 1463 and 1470 on the site of the Church of the Holy Apostles, being rebuilt after the earthquake of 1766. The türbe ( tomb ) of Mehmet lies behind the mosque.
Over the centuries, migration to the area led to the construction of densely-concentrated housing, although in the late 1940s parts of the district were occupied by fields and gardens, whilst the traveller passing out of the city to the west emerged into open countryside.
It's all very different today.
