Nothing is known of the early history of this church, possibly dedicated to St Theodore. The main part of the church is thought to date from the 11th - early 12th centuries.
After the Ottoman Conquest the church was converted into a mosque by Molla Şemsettin Gürani, by whose name it is also known.
