This village became a place of pilgrimage in the 5th century for those visiting Simeon Stylites, who spent over 30 years living out his life on a small platform on top of a stone pillar on the hill above. He died in 459 and from 476 a large church and monastery complex was constructed at the site, attracting more pilgrims. The ruins of various buildings to accommodate them survive next to the modern village, to the south of the church.
