Saqia - gearing
CS-75/2/23E2
The Saqia was used for centuries up and down the Nile as a means of raising water to irrigate land. This photograph shows the gearing, which is rotated by a draught animal attached to the vertical shaft. This causes a wheel, fixed to the horizontal shaft and set above a well, to turn and raise water in pots fastened to ropes looped over it.
This site is set back some way from the Nile, north of Kabushiya.
