Arthur Holroyd was born in London in 1806. In 1836 he decided to go travelling and went to Egypt. He journeyed along the Nile to Sudan, travelling south to Dongola and beyond, crossing the Bayuda Desert to Khartoum. After exploring the Blue Nile he returned to the city and set off back along the Nile to Egypt.
On the way he stayed at Shendi for a few days and visited the ancient sites of Musawwarat, and Naqa, where he carved his name on the wall of the Roman Kiosk there in late May 1837.
