The Great Enclosure
Halina Paulette Electric
This enigmatic Meroitic site, thought to date from the 3rd century BC, lies some 25km from the Nile, south-west of Shendi. It consists of a number of buildings, together with a series of corridors, ramps and compunds, surrounding a temple. Nearby are other temples and a large hafir, an enclosure designed to collect and store annual rainfall.
View towards the main temple from the north-west.
