Hugh MacDiarmid ( real name Christpher Murray Grieve ) was a Scottish poet, writer and political activist. He was born and grew up in Langholm, Dumfriesshire. He died in 1978 at the age of 86. This memorial, in the form of an open book, designed by Jake Harvey, was unveiled in 1985 on a hill above the town.
Sited next to the narrow road from Langholm to Newcastleton, which skirts Whita Hill.
