The main entry to central Rome from the north was through the 16th century Porta del Popolo ( off to the right ). The square we see today was laid out Guiseppe Valdier between 1811-1822. On the right the tower of the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo. The Egyptian obelisk - Obelisco Flaminio - brought from Heliopolis by the Romans, was erected here in 1589.
